The one I was replacing a power cord/wallplug. I thought that is how they all were made. Nevertheless, by using a cord with a wall plug converter, it does not steal power from the computer. So, I think the design from the manufacturer is poor and I should read the ads more carefully. The words I should have looked for is " has separate power supply and cable. Other than that, it seems to be working fine. I used my old power supply and did not use the USB power "connecting" cable. An additional benefit I got from my configuration was having one extra USB port to use....
