This review is from: J-Tech Digital SuperSpeed USB 3.0 4-Port Hub Backward Compatible with USB 2.0 with USB 3.0 CableRecently, I installed a USB 3.0 PCI-E card to one of my old desktop. I purchased this J-Tech Digital 4 Port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub. I connected to this hub to Western Digital My Passport 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive. This hub does very good job and works very stable so far. This is my first USB 3.0 hub, so I cannot compare to others, but I can say this is an excellent product....
This review is from: J-Tech Digital SuperSpeed USB 3.0 4-Port Hub Backward Compatible with USB 2.0 with USB 3.0 CableI bought this for the value.
At first I criticized this hub for dropping out on me when I had a USB 2.0 HDD plugged into it (nothing else). In fact, this is still an issue, though it could have been a driver issue, or perhaps that HDD drew more power than the hub could handle per-port even with the hub's external power. When I replaced the USB 2.0 HDD with a newer model of the same HDD that supports USB 3.0, the drop-outs ceased. In the end, I don't have the time to investigate the cause of the original problems, so will give the hub the benefit of the doubt. It could have been any number of things, from a driver issue, to the particular power demands of that HDD overwhelming the hub's per-port capacity (even when externally powered).
This hub does have an external power adapter, the #1 thing you should be looking for besides USB 3.0 support. If a hub doesn't have an external power source, then make sure it at least has a port to allow for you to use a universal AC adapter. These days USB devices draw more power than ever, so you must make sure you have enough to supply.
However, the power cord is unusually short. The USB 3.0 cord, in contrast, is longer than average. With the USB 3 cord costing more than the power cord, I'd say this was an oversight. Of course, you can work around this limitation.
It seems to be able to deliver on true USB 3 speeds, so does what it is advertised to do!...
This review is from: J-Tech Digital SuperSpeed USB 3.0 4-Port Hub Backward Compatible with USB 2.0 with USB 3.0 CableFor some reason, the designers of this hub thought it would be a good idea to include a power supply with a very short cord, so, unless you plan to put this hub with in about 4 feet of a power outlet, you can't plug it in (it will work without power, as long as you don't need to draw more than 900mA through the hub, total). So they saved 0.2 cents and made the hub a poor buy. There are plenty of other USB 3.0 hubs out there, don't buy this one....
