Take a look at the case: there isn't one single vent or any way for heat to get out of the case. It's made of soft plastic which conducts nada as far as heat goes. There must be a little coming out of the top ports for the USB keychain drives though because mine are actually a little hot to the touch after being removed from there.
So, making used of the super-secret fact (unknown to electronics designers or architects) that heat rises, I drilled a 1 mm hole in the top of the case. Now it doesn't overheat and shutdown at random. Mind you, when my desktop machine goes into power-saver mode (sleep) the hub sometimes disappears and has to be unplugged and plugged back in. Of course, this used to be the case every time instead of just some of the time and power-saver mode is always something that is tacked onto the system at the last minute and seldom works properly anyway so who knows? I've seen directly connected USB devices act like this too as not everyone implements USB in exactly the same way.
So, try it out. YMMV. It might save you a trip back to the store to get a new one. (Although, after drilling a hole in it you probably can't take it back now ;-). Perhaps the Belkin engineering staff might look into this "Heat Rises" technology and put a vent in future versions....
